Like those who journeyed across the ocean to start a new life in a new place, Carignan is a grape with a storied past. Originating from France, the variety was brought to the New World by immigrant Italian families, largely to California's Mendocino County. Some of those original plantings remain today, and this old-vine blend is made from organic grapes that were established in the mid-20th century. Composed of 75% Carignan and 25% Petite Sirah, the wine exhibits rich flavors of blackberry, blue plum and blueberry, tinged with savory notes from the whole-cluster fermentation. Pair this romantic wine with an herb-crusted leg of lamb.
